Mother's Day in a special restaurant in Budapest

In Hungary, mothers are celebrated on the first Sunday of May, and in May 2024 it will be the fifth day of the month. But where does the tradition of Mother's Day come from and how can you make it memorable? Read on as we'll be back with the details!

What are the roots of Mother's Day?

Mother's Day has its origins in antiquity and can be traced back to an annual spring celebration when the Greeks paid homage to Rhea, wife of Cronus and mother of many of the deities of Greek mythology. Christians celebrated the Virgin Mary, the mother of Christ, on the fourth Sunday of Lent, while in the 1600s a red-letter holiday similar to today's Mother's Day appeared in the calendar in England. In England, after a prayer service in honour of the Virgin Mary, children would come to church with flowers and gifts to honour their mothers. In Hungary, Mother's Day was first celebrated in 1925, under the banner of the Hungarian Youth Red Cross, in the workshop of the MÁV machine factory, with the participation of the workers' children.

In addition to Hungary, mothers are celebrated on the first Sunday in May in Romania, Serbia, Portugal, Spain and, of course, England.
