Where does carnival come from?
The length and exact timing of Carnival varies from year to year, as although it always starts on 6 January, it ends on the day of the start of Easter Lent. In this way, the carnival period can last from the beginning of January to the beginning of March, but in 2023 it will end on 22 February.
The holiday's strange-sounding name has German roots and has been in use since the Middle Ages. Its meaning refers to the beginning of the fasting period, as the last day of carnival is the last day on which meat and alcohol can be consumed. It is understandable that moderation is not the order of the day and the atmosphere can be quite carnivalesque. But let's stop for a word. Isn't a carnival the same as a carnival? Of course it is! In fact, the Italian word for carnival itself has the same meaning: „carne vale”, or meat brain.
