Where does English breakfast come from?

You'll know immediately from its telltale name that it's from England. According to some sources, it dates back to the 13th century, but back then it was only known as a feast for royalty. Later, in the industrial age, you'll find calorie-dense breakfasts, but by this time it was no longer the privilege of kings to eat a nutritious English breakfast. Miners, who worked 10 to 14 hours a day, needed high-calorie, energising breakfasts...

Classic English breakfasts with a twist

Eggs, bacon and sausage - three staples of English breakfasts that will keep you going until dinner. But English Breakfast isn't just about these three ingredients: grilled tomatoes and mushrooms are usually on the plate too. The Irish substitute white pudding, made from minced pork with rice and chopped parsley, for fried sausages. For the authentic Scottish breakfast, the sausage is replaced by a traditional national delicacy, haggis. Haggis is made by stuffing the stomach of a sheep with minced offal, onions and oatmeal, cooking it all, flavouring it with whisky and adding mashed potatoes and turnips at the end.

But what is a traditional English breakfast like?

First, you can usually decide how you want to eat the egg. You can ask for fried eggs, scrambled eggs, poached eggs, or even plain boiled eggs. You start with two eggs and don't start with one. Then there's toast made from rye or white bread, or even French toast, toasted bacon, fried sausage, sauteed or fried mushrooms, fried or grilled tomatoes, and finally, some cooked beans with tomatoes to top it all off.
